FULL SAGA: Where in the World are Radley and Ty Bentli!??

Where Is Ty Bentli part 9
After my station in DC flipped formats, Corri and I decided to postpone the next job and return to Los Angeles – the city where we met and fell in love 4 years ago (I won’t bore you with details, but you can bore yourself by CLICKING HERE)

The move from East to West Coast turned into a cross-country, month-long road trip with a 2-year-old!  Most of the travel time was just me and the rugrat – which I anticipated would allow us a max of 11 to 13 miles a day.

Throughout the trip, Corri was flying off to work in NYC or LA, while Rad and I zig-zagged across the US.  My belief that a 2-year-old couldn’t be entertained for long stints in the car was SO wrong!  A huge relief, and simultaneously AWESOME as we used the inspiration of bladders and billboards to decide where we’d stop along the way.

I captured the whole adventure on my iPhone, and edited it one piece at a time while lying in a random hotel (chosen by my Hotels.com app, each night).  After Radley had commandeered the extra queen bed – except that one night in the honeymoon suite… that’s not an off-color joke, and it did include a kicky-feet barricade – I’d mixdown our latest escapades!

As you watch this story unfold, parents will quickly understand why this was hands-down the most-fulfilling month of my life!  I watched my kid mature and physically grow, lean on me and challenge himself, and I learned all the words to a certain (constantly-present) song…

THE FINAL CHAPTERS ARE NOW POSTED!

Note: this was initially meant as a home video for my family, but so many friends and family were asking for it, that I started utilizing YouTube and then realized that dads might be curious about the potential of such a trip…or at least enjoy some of the random pit-stops and distractions along the way!

I did realize that there’s absolute no pretense in this video.  I hear my ‘Dad-voice ‘delivery, see the overly-sentimental moments and probably left my social security number in the footage somewhere..

Queen Mary starbucksIt took me a while to fully embrace that I was a dad…not in the logical way – I can’t count the times I’ve changed a dirty diaper, or (more-recently) mopped the entire house after realizing Radley isn’t quite at 100 on potty-training, yet.  I have certainly seen personality changes – like the slight hesitations where there used to be NO hesitation (I’m less insane on my snowboard, I actually second-guessed whether I should go solo skydiving last summer, I now base my decisions on what is best for my family in the longterm)…

The tricky part was this:  What’s my identity!?

I have been on the radio since I was 17 years old – that was 18 years ago!  The first half of my life was spent growing into myself as an adolescent, and trying to figure out who “I” was.. We have all faced the constant identity crisis of being a teenager.

The next half of my life was spent on-air, where it quickly became obvious to me that I needed to understand myself before I could effectively communicate with my audience.  Like any “product” I needed to have a few Key Identifiers (Coke wants you to think of them as “happy” and “ice cold” and “thirst-quenching”).  For a long time, I identified myself as a commitment-phobic, adrenaline junkie who loved helping people feel like they belong (through charities, or just by being a supportive friend).

I was literally scared of knowing what my future held.  Instead, I was constantly challenging myself to learn, experience or face something that most people never had.. **I should point out that it wasn’t all SCUBA diving with sharks or interviews with Katy Perry…I also watched a lot of iTunes movies and ate a lot of cheese-and-crackers.  But I knew I was happiest when things were crazy!

For almost two-decades, I identified myself as THAT person…then I fell in love with Corri.  Then Radley was born.

It was strange to be paralyzed in that youthful mentality that radio had afforded me, and the fly-by-night attitude of my single days.  Suddenly, I didn’t feel like that guy anymore, but that’s the guy that (actual MILLIONS of) people knew me to be..  I was hesitant to change myself too quickly, because I wasn’t sure that my listeners could make the same leap that was naturally in my heart as a parent (parents understand how sincere people are when they say having a child “just changes you…immediately”).  I made sure not to be overwhelmingly cheesy with how many pictures of Rad I posted, and although my schedule was now maxed out with family-time, I didn’t want people to start identifying me as simply a “Dad” – cuz I’m still as complex and sarcastic as I ever was…just a little slower, cuz I was initially really tired from the NYC morning show schedule and the NYC parenting schedule (which was a little more physical than cities where you can hop in a car and run to the store or whatever).

Since then, I’ve gotten MORE and MORE in touch with what it means to be “Dad” and “Ty” – and I really do put them in that order now.  Part of the reason I could ease into this in the early stages, is because you can LOVE a baby and be its dad…but you don’t have to say “Dad” things to it – cuz babies are beautiful and innocent and also pretty immobile for a while.  I started feeling more and more like “Dad” when I started having to mold the little smartass 2-year-old that is now running this house haha.  He’s brilliant and manipulative (cuz he’s a cranky little psycho one second, and then realizes he’s pushed past the line and IMMEDIATELY is the cutest, sweetest human on earth).  When Corri exasperatedly told me “I cannot get this kid to eat vegetables,” I realized she’d definitely hit the point of no return.  Then I realized I had already hit several Dad quotes out of the park in the last two weeks…and I’d put a human being in time out…and I’d insisted that Radley brush “all the way in the back, too” and “don’t touch your penis around other people”…  I’m a dad.
Plus, if you’ve watched my Instagram for the last 3 years, or watched the videos of my roadtrip across America with my son…you know I’m head-over-heels, ride-or-die, in love with that kid.  He’s the best!

Thanks to all the lessons, all the poop, all the questions, all the stories, and all the moments that have happened so far in my life as a parent, I realized I had to start documenting it in the same way I’ve always shared my life – very publicly, and as a means of seeing how it relates to the experiences that other people are having.  I love meeting other people, and whether they enjoy jumping out of airplanes, reading physics books, or happen to also be parents…I want to share stories and learn from them!

So….  I am still figuring out the world of the internet, and especially the world of being a blogger… but I have soft-launched the new site, and will be adding to it as frequently as I can manage.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?:
Ty Bentli NSD

On National Siblings Day, Jen and KQ are in the latest addition to our roadtrip epic..

We (Corri, Radley and Ty Bentli) just arrived in Los Angeles after a move across the country!  I documented the entire month long journey on my iPhone…

Sure, you hear lots of truth and real-life stories on-air, but I usually don’t show the visual version. This is the raw us!  Me: a dad, husband, brother, son and grandson…

This is probably the most-fulfilling month of my life.  It is definitely the most-special time I have had with my son!

NOTE: Normally, I wouldn’t post videos longer than a few minutes, but since you aren’t being forced to watch, you must be watching cuz you’re interested..
(if you missed PARTS ONE TWO THREE, click here)

PART 4: Stranded!  A roadtrip occurance that would normally just embarrass someone – and how I managed to make it even worse for myself!  Plus, how Radley and I wrapped up our time with my family in South Dakota and made it all the way to Colorado…but only saw 3 cars along the route! (the secret:  Nebraska)

UPDATE: PART 5 – To Denver.. now added (bottom of this page)

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?:
Collage
We (Corri, Radley and Ty Bentli) arrived in Los Angeles after a move across the country!  I documented the entire month long journey on my iPhone…

Although you hear a lot of truth and real-life stories on-air, I rarely show this version on camera. This is the raw us!  Me: a dad, husband, brother, son and grandson…

This is probably the most-fulfilling month of my life.  It is definitely the most-special time I have had with my son!

**Since it was originally intended just for family-viewing, be warned:  I am pretty sure I wore the same three outfits (that were in the one suitcase I could finagle out of our PACKED Jeep), and you’ll hear the sleepy, sentimental side – especially in Segment 1 when I was DEAD tired!

NOTE:  The 8 segments that I’ll post range from 2 minutes to 25 minutes – I edited them sporadically when Rad was asleep in our hotel rooms before I conked out for the night. Some encompass a week or more, some are just a couple days.  Normally, I wouldn’t post videos longer than a few minutes, but since you aren’t being forced to watch, you must be watching cuz you’re interested..

There’s no quiz afterward, just watch what you want to – maybe you’ll understand why I am so in love with the people in my life!

PART 1:  DC to Atlanta
This is the MOST-tired version of me.  I spent 36-straight hours moving everything from our Rockville home into storage units, then cleaning the whole house and repairing nail-holes, etc.  THEN drove 6 hours to Chetola in North Carolina to catch up with Corni and Rad (and watch the Super Bowl that night…I made it until 2-minutes left in the game)

We snowboarded for a couple days and then headed to spend time with Corri’s family in Atlanta.  She flew to LA from there…I shipped my car, packed Corri’s Jeep FULL, and Radley and I started on the next (1200 mile) leg of our epic..

PART 2:  Arriving in Sioux Falls
We arrived in Sioux Falls, where I grew up.  Meet my fam, watch Radley and I be lazy…
**again, meant for memories and family…this may not be the most-exciting part of the video, but its my life!

I believe this is where we are introduced to the fact that Radley MUST have “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” on repeat whenever he is sleeping…a tougher fact to deal with when I am sleeping in the same room or using an old-school monitor to hear what’s going on 2 stories above me.

PART 3:  Adding a Dakota
More time with my fam around South Dakota.  My mom (“Gram”) took Radley and his cousin, Jocie, to the SoDak Children’s Museum.  I got to come along to supervise…and it turns out: I mostly just played and want to live there now.

You also get to meet KG’s fam…I have known her since we were (slightly older) kids playing together.. now, we see how much work that was for our parents.

PART 4: Stranded!  A roadtrip occurance that would normally just embarrass someone – and how I managed to make it even worse for myself!  Plus, how Radley and I made it all the way from South Dakota to Colorado…but only saw 3 cars along the way! (the secret:  Nebraska)

PART 5: To Denver  We are reunited with Corri, finally!  After 2 weeks apart, she only had eyes for one…  but was it Radley or Ty.  And, Radley and Ty ‘communicate’ to avert disaster in a hotel room!
